Google's 237 MPD building is a large, modern office complex located in the heart of Silicon Valley in California. In 2018, Google partnered with Huge and four leading architecture firms to design this first ever Google-owned, Cloud building at Sunnyvale. Our brief was to transform the 20,000 sq ft main arterial corridor into an experience that showcases the historical significance of the site, the future potential of Google Cloud, and the enormous sustainability measures taken to achieve a net-zero building energy certification.
Over the course of 18 months (and one pandemic), Huge crafted five bespoke interventions that invoke awe in first-time visitors, without risking the ire of resident staff.
Every concept must express Cloud stories in a memorable, purposeful, and inclusive manner, in concert with the building and its environment.
My role on this project spanned across two of those interventions: Helios, a living light sculpture that displays real-time energy harvest data from the core of the building - live building insights in unlikely places - and Pulse, a giant community wall that forges a meaningful connection between the staff, the work, and the physical environment. Both installations help bring the "living building" concept to reality.
Attracting people to experience the installation and make it part of an
everyday routine are some of the UX challenges I faced.
HELIOS
A living building, that harvest energy.
Helios is a circular light source showing the live solar energy harvested and energy used with live data. The goal is to communicate 237 MPD’s effort to use 100% renewable energy by representing the energy the building harvests.
Solution
Create a circular light source that sends light beams outwards and clockwise as the day progresses—showing the live solar energy that is harvested. In the center, a second smaller circle of lights represent energy used. The installation will cycle through to showcase live data in-the-moment, and aggregate monthly and yearly totals.
I've grounded the solution to something I'm familiar with: data visualization. So at the end of the day we're just talking about how to display metrics in a graph; in a fun and interactive way! The goal was to present the data in an easy to understand manner.
PULSE
A living building, that fosters connection among people.
Pulse is an interactive wall of framed community questions and answers and whimsical illustrations – that come to life – with a discrete mix of LCD screens and real canvases.
Solution
Create an interactive "water cooler” moment that fosters a sense of community and enables a many-to-many conversation among Cloud employees. Employees can suggest and respond to questions through an internal platform each day, the top 3 questions will be displayed prominently on the wall. Employees can post responses to the wall via their mobile phone.
I also needed to think about the space where the experience would take place: a 50 ft. gallery wall with 46 printed frames mixed with 24 displays with different sizes. Screens and content types need to deliver information, but also trigger interaction. We'd need to account for passive states and active states, and plan the content in cycles of 24 hours while being mindful that the wall will have less fresh content at night or on weekends.
237 MPD met robust sustainability goals, including being powered by 100% renewable energies, onsite water treatment and recycling, zero plastic or single-use waste, and salvaged materials.
The Pulse Wall and Helios are currently installed and operating at 237 Moffet Park Dr. Sunnyvalle - California USA
